Prior to 1988 the vast majority of the current Southwest Shewa zone was united under
Chebo & Gurage and Menagesha Awraja of Shewa Administrative Region. While during
1988, with the formation of People Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, areas under Jibat
& Mecha, Chebo & Gurage, Kembeta & Hadiya Awrajas were structured in a newly
manner and form West Shewa Administrative Region by splitting from the Shewa
Region. Thus, West Shewa Administrative Region was continued until 1993 considering
Weliso town as a capital of the administrative Region. This structure further continued
during the transitional period (1991-1993E.C.) even after the downfall of the Derg
Regime. With the formation of Regional States, during 1993, West Shewa
Administrative Region ignoring part of Gurage, Kembeta & Hadiya awrajas to the SNNP
and once again form one of the zones of Oromiya Regonal State by shifting the zonal
capital from Weliso to Ambo at the end of 1993.
