EAST SHEWA SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE

Before 1988, most parts of East Shewa Zone were under the Yerer and Kereyu Awraja
along with other ten districts (Dulecha, Fentale, Boset, Lume, Ade’a, Liben-Chukala,
Gimbichu, Minjar, Shenkora and Berehe). In 1988, during the formation of Peoples’
Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, most districts forming different ‘awrajas’. This
structure continued until the transitional period (1991-1993), even after the downfall of
the Derg Regime. Therefore, with the formation of Regional States in 1993 East Shewa
zone considering Adama town as zonal and district capital, and thenafter Adama town
Administration has formed. Currently, East Shewa zone undertakes its administrative
duties and responsibility in 10 districts (Fantale, Boset, Adama, Lume, Bora, Dugda,
Adami Tullu Jido Kombolcha, Ade’a, Liben and Gimbichu) and 3 urban centers under
reform namely; Matehara, Mojo and Batu (Ziway).
